Just fixed my Buds Busa, once and for all....

OK, last year a freind of mine bought a used 02 Busa with 8K miles on it, the bike is in great shape but the end of last year it started running bad, so he thought it was the injectors and changed them with brand new ones, still ran bad, so he seen the fuel rail was a little trashed so he bought all new orings, then a map sensor and then the season ended and he parked it, so now he starts it this year and of course it didnt forget it was broken so it runs like trash, he rides it to my house last week and tells me the entire story of what they have done last year, I take the bike for a ride, and I know its the fuel pump, but all his lines are *****ty and his rail is beat up so he looks up all the parts and says its around $600, I tell him why not just put a complete aftermarket fuel system, I said I bet it will be less than $1000 and he has money so he agrees...
    So I ordered...
MSD Fuel Pump, Mallory 3 port HP reg, Gauge, Billet fuel filter, Billet fuel rail, Billet fuel tank adaptor, Billet tranny vent plate, and all the AN fittings and hose {I did it in -4}- the 2 bills combined came to $698. It took about a week and a half to get the parts and he kept the bike at my house, After all the parts arrived I started....
I lifted his tank, pulled his rail, pump assembly, and tranny vent tower Bolted on the tranny plate, and the tank adaptor, mounted the MSD pump on top of the tranny with the filter next to it, mounted the regulator in front of the engine on the frame and bolted on the billet fuel rail, I ran the first hose from the tank to the filter, out of the filter to the pump, out of the pump to the fuel rail, out of the fuel rail to the reg, out of the reg and back to the fuel tank {just a big loop}. I cut the plug off of the old pump and connected it to the MSD pump then plugged it in, I put a stronger fuse in the fuese box and then set the fuel pressure with the engine off and key on...
The bike started up instantly {he said it never started that fast even before it broke} and the fuel pressure stayed nice and stable... He took it for a ride around the block and came back with the biggest grin on his face.... Its fixed....
This was a really easy mod {except I forgot I needed new screws for the billett rail, trans tower, and tank adaptor, but that was only a 10 minute trip to napa and $12 for some sweet SS screws} and the bike runs much better, hes taking it to get it remapped after it warms up
He has Ti force exhaust, BMC filter, PC3, with the air box mod, but besides that ts stock, I took the bike for a ride, and its feels way smoother than a new busa, the aftermarket fuel system changes the bikes throttle response, the Busa has that cheapy internal pump and regulator with a sock filter, the Mallory reg, MSD pump, and billet filter are much better units, and then if he ever wants to throw on a 6psi turbo he all he needs is a Vortech 6-1 FMU and the Turbo!!!
The entire conversion took about an hour, but I used boiling water to put the fittings together if you use grease and muscle add in another hour and some blisters with a side of sore arms and wrists....
I should have taken pics, but I never think about it until its too late {plus my wife gets upset when I get grease on the $900 digicam.....

+1 on the parts list. Does the tank adapter work on both internal and external pump models? I will definitely do this mod whenever my stock pump hiccups.

    Parts list for this mod... {from summitracing.com}
OK so the fuel pump is MSD-2225 and the reg is Mallory 4305M the fuel filter to use if you are using the -4hose {which is much easier to work with than -6 and will support up to 350Hp} is the-4 NOS unit.. http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=NOS%2D15550NOS&N=700+115&autoview=sku
and as for the fuel rail, tranny vent plate, and tank adaptor you can get them at a few different places {our sponsors may have them..}, the guy I deal with isnt a member here and hes also hit or miss, them parts are around, {the plate for the crankcase breather/tranny vent and the tank adaptor are easy to make if you are half way cabable....
For the fittings on the reg, you will need -8 Oring X -4AN... and how you plumb it can be your own creation as long its in this order
Out of the tank adaptor into the filter
Out of the filter into the pumps inlet
Out of the pumps outlet and into the rail
Out of the rail and into the regs inlet
Out of the regs return {bottom tap} and into the tank adaptors other fitting...
Heres a pic of the setup in my turbo bike, these are -6 fittings and the blue part all the way to the left under he fuel rail is the FMU which you will not need unless you go turbo....

As you can see in my pic the tank adaptor is for external, if you dont want to use the tank adaptor, you can modify your bikes stock assembly to work with an external pump and keep your fuel gauge.... Its pretty easy , just gut the internals of your fuel set except for the float and rest of the gas gauge parts, then use either a coupling or hose clam on the original tank adaptors bottom, and grind away anything that isnt needed in your tank.... Ive done it, but the tank adaptor is sweet, and I dont care aout the gas gauge on a bike, {Busa is my fisrt bike with a gauge, and its inaccurate and unnessesary {besides I have my gearindicator mounted over the gauge so I cant see it anyway....

Im in Rhode Island, I dont have a shop but a really good freind of mine does, and I have a key ..
We just enjoy playing with bikes, whether were putting a turbo kit on or throwing in a Power commander theres ussually a few guys around and someones always doing somthing, its where I built my bike and plenty of others.... No one is really in it for money, just like bikes, and between all of us, theres enough know how to do pretty much anything, I am a novist engineer, and mechanical contractor, I am a certified mechanic and worked as a deisel mechanic and wleder for 5 years before I started HVAC... The owner of the garage went to school in florida for motorcycle repair and is very good with hand tools... We have setup and tuned NOS bikes, Turbo bikes and Ive mounted more exhaust stystems then I care to mention, Dyno jet should pay me for the amount of Power commanders I installed...
But anyway I see your in Iraq and byyour name I take it your Busa has a turbo?

he may get a dyno sheet, If I talk to him before he gets it tuned, Ill ask him to get it printed.... Ive tuned my bike a few times, and never printed one sheet, I dont know why, just never bothered...
This will make more consistant HP, maybe a little more hp but its one of them things that will allow you to get the most out of the rest of your mods... Plus the Busas fuel system isnt that great, most problems the busa has are in the fuel system wether its a bad pump, cracked housing, or a leak they have there down falls, and all factory regs suck, even with the high output GM fuel injected cars I play with, the first thing to go is that junk regulator, and if you gauge your busa, you will see there are no 2 the same, there all over the place...
BUT the best thing about doing it is that if you have a good exhaust and air filter you can raise your fuel pressure a little and lowe the map accross the board {take away fuel with the power commander but add fuel with pressure instead}, this will give you better fuel atomization which makes more power, better fuel economy, and throttle response... But this is a secret mod, lol, if too many people do it, then it wont be my special mod.....
