Many of you have probably been reading the thread on Denver's new anti loud pipes law. Denver restricts loud pipes
In that thread I suggested that anyone who cares about our rights as riders should consider joining the AMA.
I must tell you that loud pipes are NOT favored by the AMA (nor by me, to tell you the truth, at least not straight pipes), but they do and will fight against discriminatory regulations such as this law in Denver, wich apparently singles out loud bike exhausts, ingoring other vehicles. Anyway, the link is below, check it out, see what you think.

brian, this may sound mean spirited, but I want you to see the other side of the AMA. the side I have seen in an effort to spearhead direct clinical research. I was on the pathway to publishing a new version of the Hurt report. I wont go into details, but suffice to say, the AMA, SNELL and others may not be all they market themselves to be. I still do support the racer air barrier program they developed, but I no longer belong to the organization. for many reasons, but below is one inparticular.
while I salute your effort to remain an AMA member, please watch and update us if the AMA takes any direct action on behalf of the riders in the Denver area on this legislation.
while you are at it, see if you can find the AMA either developing a position on this matter in any area or state. additionally, see if they came to the help of the 6 goldwing riders in cave creek, az who were sited for a greater than 86db reading by the local police. 6 bikes with complete OEM exhausts, riding to one of the only lakes in N phoenix requires you to pass through their city limits. these guys were cited for the 86db offence. they went to court, brought all 6 vehicles for inspection, DOT stamped exhausts, a licensed mechanic, an accoustics expert and re-enactment video and db readings to the court to show why their was an increase in db; the group collective, constituted the additonal db's just as a group of automobiles do driving in a pack. find out why (in late 2005) how many motorcyclists had been cited for the db offense in cave creek, az and how many autos/trucks had been cited. the number as of late 2005 was 87 bikes, 0 cars, 0 light trucks, 0 commercial trucks. the AMA doesnt want to take a position on something like this because there is nothing in it for them. do they have the financial means? sure they do. its a matter of priority and who it effects. in my opinion, they protect like minded bikers, not the general biking public.
again, not meaning to bash, I just hope you investigate further than the AMA webpage.

JorNic, absolutely no offense taken. I don't think they are perfect either, I just don't see a better alternative out there, I really don't.
If I read you correctly, you are saying they are better than nothing right? If that is correct I agree. They help on some issues but steer clear of others.
I think they have an insurance program that isn't to bad (If you get hurt).
An alternative...hmmm...maybe I should enroll in law school and help take a stand on OUR issues once I pass the bar Seriously, I used to want to be a litigator, professional arguer
The question is not how far. The question is do you possess the constitution, the depth of faith to go as far as is needed? The Duke. Thunder Composites
I've joined the AMA... proud member since 6/6/07. I challenge anyone to show me ANY organization that is the end-all be-all. We all contribute to one insurance company or another and I know from past experience that there are loopholes as big as planets when and if the situation is in the favor of the IC. Look at the fiasco in New Orleans as an example. We'll likely not find a resource that is going to live and die for the cyclists, but the AMA and its programs does what it thinks is in the best interest of the majority. I'm going to give them a shot. IMHO its better to try and fail than to not try at all.

You said it better than I did. You seem to have a way of doing that a lot.

Sweet a AMA member. Did anyone know that a group buy for Baxley chocks can be done. And a AMA member gets a even better discount.
If you respond saying Baxley doesnt do group buys. Then have a Admin cut and start a new thread.

Haha, how can somebody actually think they can ban sport bikes. Then there will a whole argument over what a "sport bike" is. And then they'd basically kill a bunch of major companies. Politicians are seriously retarded. Why don't they deal with serious issues like getting my friends home from Iraq before they try to tackle a non-issue.

Life may begin at 30, but it doesn't get real interesting until about 150.
