    safety center virus?

Do any of you have any experience with the 'Safety Center' virus? I'm not even sure it's a virus, but whatever it is it has hijacked IE and denies access to many web pages. It even periodically restarts my computer.

If you know of anything that may make this disappear, short of reformatting the hard drive, I would appreciate it.

It doesn't mind if I come here though. Go figure.

You're talking about the one that loads a BS antivirus scanner that pops up every 10-mins?

If so, in Windows go to:
    Start
    All Programs
    Accessories
    System Tools
    System Restore

Restore your PC to the day before it started.

I've seen it so badly infected that you cannot restore... let's hope you're not that far gone.

You described that same POS program that found it's way in. Believe it or not, it started while I was shopping for a new hat. Best Buy quoted me $199 today to remove it.

I did the restore as descibed above and it seems to be working right again. Thanks G. You da man.

Some viruses install key loggers to steal passwords, credit card info, etc. and will do nothing to arouse suspicion while they are doing it. They will simply send the info to a website to be downloaded by a hacker and sold.

Generally, If you're a novice to computers, it's best to take it to a pro. (I know, it sucks)

However to be helpfull , there are some anti-virus providers who have scanners that you can run from their sites.
A couple can be found below. If they detect exploits or viruses on your machine, you can look them up on the scanner's site and find out how to remove them.

Free Virus Scan - Kaspersky Lab

    or here

ActiveScan 2.0 - A second opinion on the security of your PC

Hijackthis from Trendmicro is also worth a shot:

Trend Micro HijackThis - Free software downloads and software reviews - CNET Download.com

I you do buy newer anti-virus software and you should, get a stand alone version. (Norton anti-virus 2009, not Norton 360)

    And get windows updates!

Good luck and hope it works out.

Update your AV every day ! and regularly scan your PC and disc drives.

But most importantly.... BACK UP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

USB Memory sticks are cheap enough for monthly back ups, thats what most people are using now.

Not to beat a dead horse... you really do need some antivirus software running on that machine. Check with your ISP, almost all of them offer full versions of antivirus software that you can download for free.

+1. I had the same thing and had to go the same route. They install themselves usually when you click on their red x, or close, or cancel. sneaky bastards.

SUUUUUURE nice. Good to see. Help a fellow member. Credit were its due. Good karma. That was easy enough. U should have had your answer in the first two or three posts. Someone should have had the answer writen out in step by step form, for easy use. Not sure why someone didnt have the same idea before. Why bother G, he owns the joint. He needs to spend his time comming up with raffle items I need.

Sometimes you have to pretend you're talking to a wrestler that's watching football and drinking beer while trying to fix his neglected computer.
