A Jacksonville man has been charged in the slaying of a recent acquaintance, police said this morning.
Samuel L. Jackson, 22, of the 3600 block of Ring Lane is charged with killing Michael Williams, 39, of the 1200 block of West 32nd Street, said Lt. Larry Schmitt of the Sheriff's Office homicide unit.
Police went to Williams' home on Aug. 19 after people who knew him reported that he had not been seen in two days. Williams was found dead of a gunshot to the chest. His car and keys were missing.
Police were called the next day to the 600 block of West 21st Street to investigate a suspicious person. The man was identified as Jackson and police learned the vehicle he was using belonged to Williams.
Schmitt said Jackson had known Williams for several weeks. Investigators, led by homicide detective Karen Dukes, received conflicting stories as to the motive, Schmitt said. No further details were released.
Jackson, who is unemployed, has a prior criminal record that includes a theft conviction.
