Yes, we the tax payer wind up paying for the tab but did you know that the Civil Air Patrol is an all volunteer organization and that these folks donate their time to perform SAR activities? Hats off to the CAP. Now for Mr. Fossett is an experienced aviator, so why in the world would you fly anywhere besides doing patterns without filing a flight plan? Kind of like not putting on your helmet because I am only going down the street. All it takes is one mistake and you're history. I have to wonder if they will ever find him or if he will be like Amelia.

People donate their time to search. I like the idea, but these people shouldn't even have to be looking for this guy. He has enough funds of his own to pay for support. He had a $150,000 GPS watch from Brietling. Push a button and they will at least find the watch.
